Sitemap Checker
A healthy sitemap means faster indexing
Chexter fetches your sitemap.xml (or finds it via robots.txt), validates the XML structure and nested sitemaps, then spot-checks URL accessibility. Detects 404s and structural errors.

Methodology
How Sitemap Checker works
Can Chexter find the sitemap via /sitemap.xml or robots.txt Sitemap: directive?
Is the XML well-formed? All required tags (<url>, <loc>, <lastmod>) present?
For Sitemap Index files: all child sitemaps are fetched and validated recursively.
A sample of URLs is tested for HTTP 200 responses. 404s and redirects are flagged.
Are lastmod dates present and reasonable? Old lastmod dates signal stale content to Google.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists all URLs on your website you want search engines to crawl and index. It helps Google discover new and updated pages faster.
How often should I update my sitemap?
The sitemap should be updated every time you add or remove pages. Most CMS platforms (WordPress, Shopify) do this automatically.
What is a Sitemap Index?
A Sitemap Index is a file that points to multiple individual sitemaps — useful for large sites with thousands of URLs split across multiple files.
Does a sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. A sitemap tells Google which pages to consider, but Google decides whether to index them based on quality signals, crawl budget, and page authority.
